AfterCollege Survey of Upcoming Graduates Reveals a Focus on Benefits and Work Culture, Not Salary

San Francisco , CA – May 16th, 2006 - A recent survey of 2006 graduating college students conducted by AfterCollege Inc. ( www.aftercollege.com ), the nation's largest career network specializing in recruitment at the college level, revealed that respondents rated a potential employer's benefits and corporate culture as more significant than salary when evaluating a position.

Other interesting results of the survey include:

  • 90 percent of students plan to get a job or go to graduate school after graduation.
  • 62 percent of students will stay in the area where they went to school or move to a big city post-education.
  • 56 percent of students are either worried or very worried about finding a job after graduation. When asked to specify, students cited various reasons, such as getting the desired salary, location, work culture, right match for their skill sets. Students are less worried about not finding a job, than finding the right job.
  • More than half the respondents say the want to eventually go into business for themselves.
  • Respondents put high tech/engineering, business and finance and healthcare as the industries with the best opportunities for recent graduates right now.
  • Online research, networking with faculty and students, and referrals from friends and family ranked as the three most helpful ways to find a job.
  • 88 percent of graduating students prefer to use the internet over TV, radio and newspapers while looking for potential job opportunities.

"This graduating class is an ambitious bunch with clear goals," said Roberto Angulo, CEO of AfterCollege. "At the same time, their focus on benefits and work culture over salary while evaluating a position was a surprise. It seems students these days are more sophisticated than ever about what to look for and are willing to do a search for the right position for them."

The results of this study are based on a survey of more than 350 college students expected to graduate in 2006.
