BackgroundChildren’s National Medical Center faced a challenge that many medical centers face today – they simply needed to recruit more nurses. Based in Washington, D.C. and one of the top ten pediatric hospitals in America, they have an excellent new graduate program, but the organization’s real challenge was to get the word out to a larger group of high-caliber, qualified pediatric nursing students. Children’s National Medical Center typically hires 30-40 new nurses per year, but would really like to hire 60 new nurses annually. AfterCollege helped them meet this challenge. AfterCollege SolutionNursing positions that are posted to the AfterCollege website are also posted to hundreds of nursing schools and many of the state student nursing associations across the country, where nursing students and new grads have easy access to current job openings because they can scroll through them at school or anytime from any computer. Jill Titone, nurse recruiter said, "When I heard about the targeted way in which AfterCollege goes about matching open nursing positions with nursing grads, I was sold.” This was primarily due to the fact that some of the other on-line recruitment solutions she had looked into resulted in, “people who were not even nurses applying for my open nursing positions." "The cost to use AfterCollege is very good, especially when compared to placing an ad in one of the print or online nursing publications," Titone said ImplementationThe Children’s National Medical Center chose to begin the program with a three month trial. During this three month period, the center saw a wider variety of candidates who were coming from schools further away and many from schools that they could never visit during Career Fairs. ResultsDuring that three month trial, Children’s National Medical Center received 14 responses, interviewed 6 highly qualified candidates and made two new hires. Titone’s goal was one. As a result, Children’s National Medical Center has seen a significant increase in nursing candidates from all over the country, and has exceeded their new graduate hiring goals over the past year. "I can’t go to all the career fairs, so using AfterCollege is a perfect solution. My job postings receive increased visibility and nursing students and new grads come to me from all over the country to fill my entry-level jobs," said Titone. "We will definitely continue to use AfterCollege to fill our entry-level nursing positions." |
